A method to avoid these complicances is to shorten the first ray while lateral translation of metatarsal head is performed. This allows an easier joint reduction and helps to restore a wider Hallux dorsiflexion.
It’s possible to evaluate the amount of required shortening on Xrays dorso-plantar view just utilising as reference point the most proximal part of the Phalangeal Base of the Hallux (Ms - Metatarsal shortening Point).
The lesser Metatarsals have to be shortened consequently.
