OVERVIEW

This educational program is designed for any health care provider, but in particular for physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, and physical therapists involved and/or interested in Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) as an imaging tool to assist with diagnosis and monitoring of deep (and superficial) venous thromboembolism in the upper and lower extremities, as well as visualization of the neck vasculature (including jugular vein and carotid artery) and portal/hepatic vein system. The course will also include the identification of abdominal structures such as spleen, lymph nodes, liver, kidneys, bladder and large abdominal vessels (particularly vena cava and aorta). Basic concepts of pathophysiological findings will be discussed. Pediatric practitioners are welcomed. Teaching will involve the use of hand-held ultrasound devices to pave the pay for patient-centered care at bedside or in outpatient clinics.

If you would like to extend your learning experience, we offer an additional program, Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Training for Hemophilia and Other Arthritic Conditions Live Course (November Course): This is a 1-3 day hands-on, in-person course developed to provide training in musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS) for evaluation of hemophilic joint disease, but also other arthritic conditions and musculoskeletal abnormalities and syndromes. These courses are held upon the conclusion of the main 2-day course.

TARGET AUDIENCE

Specialties - Hematology, Radiology
Professions - Fellow/Resident, Nurse , Nurse Assistant, Other, Physical Therapist, Physician, Physician Assistant, Radiology Technician

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Discuss the basic physics of ultrasound to be able to select and maneuver transducers, identify anatomy, physiology and pathology while imaging vascular structures.
  2. Prepare for and perform the patient exam using proper ergonomics to prevent injury.
  3. Properly drape and prepare the patient for the ultrasound examination.
  4. Assess patient symptoms for urgent vs. routine venous ultrasound protocol.
  5. Perform a venous ultrasound using a handheld ultrasound system.
  6. Recognize useful imaging artifacts when performing a vascular ultrasound.
  7. Use gray scale, color and Doppler to evaluate and anatomy with ultrasound.
  8. Accurately and efficiently identify venous physiology and pathophysiology with ultrasound.
  9. Describe vascular resistance with ultrasound.
  10. Evaluate non-vascular and incidental extremity findings with ultrasound.
  11. Use published ultrasound criteria to document and report findings.

ACCREDITATION
