The Diabetes Update section on Thursday focuses on new ideas and therapies relevant to patients with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Advances in Endocrinology and Metabolism on Friday and Saturday will provide the clinician with updated, pragmatic information about the management of common endocrinologic and metabolic problems, as well as insight into important current areas in clinical research. Formal presentations will be accompanied by question and answer periods with general discussion. Clinical cases will focus on common endocrine problems encountered in clinical practice.
TARGET AUDIENCE
This course is intended for general internists, family physicians, general practitioners, surgeons, nurses, pharmacists, and other health care professionals. It is expected that the participants will gain new life skills and strategies to manage these disorders.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
DIABETES UPDATE
- At the completion of this program, course participants will be able to:
- Use newly introduced drugs to control glucose levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes;
- Utilize data from sensors and insulin pumps to improve glucose control in their patients with diabetes;
- Assess and treat gestational diabetes;
- Advise patients on a diet that can help them lose weight;
- Appreciate the treatment options for diabetic retinopathy;
- Understand the pathophysiology of Type 2 diabetes and manage treatment.
ADVANCES IN ENDOCRINOLOGY & METABOLISM
- At the completion of this program, course participants will be able to:
- Improve their management of patients with osteoporosis;
- Manage malignancy associated bone disease;
- Employ strategies to reduce the overdiagnosis of thyroid cancer;
- Use systemic therapies to treat metastatic radioiodine resistant thyroid cancer;
- Interpret pituitary MRI studies;
- Deliver high quality care for patients with paraganglioma/pheochromocytoma;
- Identify and treat endocrine complications that arise during cancer immunotherapy;
- Manage the commonly encountered bone, lipid, pituitary, adrenal and thyroid disorders.

UCSF designates this live activity for a maximum of 18.25 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
