Course Description

Sports Medicine Symposium: The Modern Athlete is a three-day symposium on current practices and innovations in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions used for recreational and elite athletes. The course will review the current literature and highlight the latest management principles for the endurance athlete, the overhead athlete, and the young athlete. Attendees will have the opportunity to perform evidence-based musculoskeletal examinations, practice diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound, enhance joint and soft tissue injection skills, and enhance their knowledge of orthobiologics, strength training, biomechanics, video analysis, and exercise physiology. The goal of the course is to enable clinicians to feel comfortable with the most up-to-date diagnostic and therapeutic modalities used for today’s modern athlete.

Educational Objectives

  • Describe treatment algorithms to diagnose, manage, and refer orthopedic pathologies and sports injuries and identify and address functional implications of musculoskeletal injuries
  • Identify and treat common musculoskeletal injuries in both elite and recreational athletes
  • Identify and treat acute and overuse musculoskeletal injuries in the pediatric, adolescent, and adult athletes
  • Describe the biomechanics of running, biking, swimming, and pitching
  • Identify runners who would benefit from 2D video analysis
  • Identify athletes’ training techniques that put them at risk for injury
