Overview
Asthma affects over 300 million individuals worldwide, and between 5-10% of Americans, making it one of the most prevalent common chronic diseases. Insight into medical biology provides insight into disease mechanisms. As such, asthma research is shifting from a broad perspective to a narrower focus that includes cellular profiles, protein analysis and genetic markers combined with clinical measures. This symposium will address underlying pathophysiology of asthma, current issues related to heterogeneity and novel therapies.

Objectives

  • Explain how the asthmatic airway epithelium contributes to disease
  • Recognize different inflammatory pathways by which asthma develops and identify in those pathways therapeutic targets in use or in development
  • Discuss the heterogeneity in asthmatic patients and illustrate how to use various biomarkers to begin to personalize therapy
