Overview

Seizing the Moment: Emerging Insights in Complex Epilepsy Care is planned and implemented by physicians and a nurse practitioner in collaboration between experts in the fields of epileptology and functional neurosurgery. This activity is designed for general neurologists, primary care physicians, clinical neurophysiologists, and nurse practitioners, but may be of interest to functional neurosurgeons and neuropsychologists, and other advanced practice providers. This 8-hour course will provide education through lectures and dedicated question-and-answer time on important topics in epilepsy. The activity will highlight evolving definitions in the epilepsy literature and emerging insights into complex epilepsy care that should inform clinical practice with the intent of improving patient outcomes and quality of life. The goal of this activity is to enhance knowledge amongst providers taking care of epilepsy patients, to update providers about new frameworks for discussing epilepsy care, and to foster collaborative opportunities to expedite diagnostic and therapeutic pipelines for complex epilepsy patients.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this activity, attendees will be able to:

  • Formulate a plan for identifying appropriate patient selection conditions requiring a higher level of care to improve patient outcomes
  • Select patients with epilepsy best suited for genetic evaluation
  • Implement epilepsy treatment strategies that reflect rational polypharmacy
  • Incorporate neurodiagnostic results into longitudinal treatment planned for patients with epilepsy
  • Appraise the utility of surgical interventions in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy
  • Recognize the impact of social determinants of health on epilepsy care
  • Tailor specific gender-related treatment strategies to address women's issues in epilepsy
