COURSE DESCRIPTION
This novel interdisciplinary sleep course will be provided as a remote learning experience for doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals involved in the treatment of sleep disorders. This course will consist of both didactic lectures as well as an engaging panel discussion centered around complex and interesting cases. Course material will include an overview of the full spectrum of sleep disorders as how they affect the adult population. Pathophysiology and treatment of common sleep disorders will also be discussed, with a particular focus on obstructive sleep apnea that will align with an overarching goal that focuses on the comprehensive optimization of treatment tailored to the individual modern sleep patient. Through this course, we intend to provide an understanding of traditional sleep testing methods and the latest diagnostic technology aimed at providing comfort for the patient while maintaining accuracy. We will also explore the effects of sleep disorders on the population including their psychological impact, especially in the era of COVID-19. Additionally, we will provide an update on the traditional treatments of obstructive sleep apnea, including advances in mechanical ventilation. This course will also discuss the role of drug-induced sleep endoscopies and explain how the site and character of a patient's obstruction are used to determine appropriate treatment. In addition, we will address various categories of medications that can influence sleep and sleep disorders. Finally, we will discuss advances in surgical intervention including hypoglossal nerve stimulation. At the end of this course, the participant will have improved expertise in sleep disorder management with a particular understanding of how to individualize therapy of a particularly complex disease process using a multidisciplinary approach.
