Discuss the risks and benefits of ablative treatments as compared to partial nephrectomy. Review current data of cytoreductive prostatectomy, and identify appropriate candidates for systemic chemotherapy for prostate cancer. Understand the use of gene sequencing tools to analyze lymph node metastases and the primary prostate tumor.

Objectives

At the end of this continuing medical education activity, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the risks and benefits of ablative treatments as compared to partial nephrectomy and how to create a team approach in treating small renal masses, as well as understand the outcomes of the treatment and in specific situations where they are applied.
  • Review the current data of cytoreductive prostatectomy.
  • Identify appropriate candidates for systemic chemotherapy for prostate cancer.
  • Evaluate ureteral perfusion using a novel technique, and reduce a very common complication seen in bladder cancer surgery.
  • Identify regional differences in the delivery of care for intermediate and high risk prostate cancer and recognize data supporting best practices and guideline driven care.
  • Incorporate aspects of quality improvement into treatment of intermediate and high risk prostate cancer.
  • Discuss gene sequencing tools to analyze lymph node metastases and the primary prostate tumor. Identify how gene sequencing can be integrated into sentinel node evaluation in prostate cancer. Examine how reliable a gene sequencing based approach to pelvic lymph node metastatic anatomy can be compared to the current surgical standard.
  • Increase knowledge of implementing new techniques that will improve resident education regarding robotic surgery.
  • Outline the various types of cultural diversities (gender, age, race, religion, culture, etc.) that relate to demographics, diagnosis and treatment.
