This activity will enhance participants’ knowledge base of common gastrointestinal (GI) problems and increase their confidence in managing these issues by providing a review of basic principles of pediatric GI care. Particular attention will be paid to the diagnosis and initial management of the GI problems most commonly seen by the primary caregiver. Formal question and answer periods paneled by the faculty will follow each session. This activity is brought to you by the Comer Children's Hospital.
Target Audience
This activity is designed for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals dedicated to the treatment of children and youth in a school setting.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:
- Discuss the most common toxic and foreign body ingestions in children;
- Describe how to interpret a workup for children with toxic and foreign body ingestions;
- Identify treatment options for children with toxic and foreign body ingestions;
- Discuss the clinical applications for commonly used GI medications;
- Explain common side effects seen with GI medications;
- Analyze the rationale for the use of one drug class over another to treat gastroenterological conditions in pediatric patients;
- Recall the guidelines for evaluating the jaundiced baby;
- Describe how a hepatologist will likely proceed with working up an infant with direct/conjugated hyperbilirubiemia;
- Discuss the differential diagnosis for an infant with elevated direct/conjugated bilirubin levels;
- State the short- and long-term outcomes for a patient diagnosed with biliary atresia;
- Recall common and uncommon causes of diarrhea;
- Identify when to refer a pediatric patient with gastroenterological issues to a specialist;
- Discuss how diet, probiotics, drugs and the microbiome affect gastroenterological conditions in pediatric patients.
