Bridging the Gaps: Incorporating Religion and Spirituality in Whole Person Care course will review how a patient’s religion and/or spirituality can intersect with health care so that participants can apply this knowledge in holistic patient-centered care. This course will teach how to use standardized assessments such as the FICA tool, to understand the role spirituality plays in the lives of their patients and participants will utilize a team-based, inter-professional approach, including the utilization of community partners, in the care of patients with spiritual distress.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

At the end of this activity, participant should be able to:

  • reflect upon how a patient’s religion and/or spirituality can intersect with health care so that participants can apply this knowledge in holistic patient-centered care.
  • review the recent literature on the intersection of religiosity, spirituality and health.
  • learn how to use standardized assessments such as the FICA tool, to understand the role spirituality plays in the lives of their patients.
  • utilize a team-based, inter-professional approach, including the utilization of community partners, in the care of patients with spiritual distress.
  • review how to provide religious accommodation for patients with a religious identity.
  • reflect upon one own’s spirituality as it relates to professional and personal well-being.
