Learning Objectives

At the completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Recall referral criteria for patients with suspected or confirmed AAA, including indications for consultation with vascular surgeons or other specialists for further evaluation and management;
  • Identify specific demographic and clinical risk factors associated with a high likelihood of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) development in patients, including age, gender, smoking history, and family history of cardiovascular diseases;
  • Recognize potential collaborative opportunities among clinicians from diverse specialties and those working outside healthcare to optimize patient care, research initiatives, and technological advancements in aortic aneurysm management;
  • Order appropriate screening and imaging studies for AAA diagnosis based on clinical indications and guidelines, such as abdominal ultrasound, computed tomography (CT) angiography, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI);
  • Describe how to perform a comprehensive physical examination to accurately diagnose AAA, including palpation of the abdomen for pulsatile masses, assessment of peripheral pulses, and auscultation for bruits;
  • Discuss the utility and clinical implications of emerging imaging modalities and techniques (e.g., 4D MRI, contrast-enhanced ultrasound) in the diagnosis, surveillance, and treatment planning for patients with aortic disease, including AAA;
  • Evaluate evidence-based treatment options for AAA, encompassing conservative approaches (e.g., blood pressure control, smoking cessation) and preventive medical therapies (e.g., statin therapy, antiplatelet agents), considering patient-specific factors and comorbidities.
