Recent advances in the diagnosis and management of neuromuscular disorders are significant. Techniques for imaging the peripheral nerves and muscles are ever more sophisticated and rapid advances in molecular genetics have led to the discovery of increasing numbers of heritable conditions. Novel therapies are now available for some devastating conditions that were unimaginable a mere decade ago. This course is designed to provide neurologists and other practitioners interested in neuromuscular disorders with an up-to-date review of clinical issues critical to the care of these patients - from tools to shorten the diagnostic odyssey to the latest treatment options including precision medicine. We will also review the continued challenges of the SARS-CoV-2 virus on the neuromuscular system. Finally, telemedicine provides high-risk neuromuscular patients with severe mobility issues access to much-needed medical care. This course aims to provide helpful tips on how to best facilitate a neuromuscular evaluation during a telehealth visit. Our goal is to bridge the gap between recent advances and their translation in everyday neurological practice.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
After participating in this activity, clinicians should be able to:
- Analyze and utilize recent advances in treatment of SMA
- Discuss recent updates in clinical practice, understand results of recent clinical trials and direction of ongoing studies
- Summarize the treatment of Myasthenia Gravis including the mainstay of treatment and the most recent advances in treatment of refractory symptoms
- Recognize the diverse presentations of immune neuropathy and distinguish them from a number of untreatable neuropathies
- Discuss the concept of diagnostic certainty in immune neuropathies and current treatment strategies for classic CIDP, Lewis Sumner syndrome, multifocal motor neuropathy, and distal acquired demyelinating neuropathy
