OVERVIEW
The last several years has seen an explosion of therapeutic options for patients living with heart failure across the spectrum of disease. New drugs and devices have emerged that improve quality of life and survival for those in the earlier stages of illness. Concomitantly, the options for mechanical support and transplantation continues to evolve for those patients presenting with cardiogenic shock and advanced stage heart failure. The goal of this course is to provide clinicians a fund of knowledge about the contemporary care of heart failure patients, including novel and emerging therapies available to this increasingly complex patient population. This activity is intended for cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, internal medicine, critical care, and rehabilitation medicine physicians as well as nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and trainees working in these disciplines.
TARGET AUDIENCE
Internists, cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and any clinician who cares for or encounters individuals with advanced cardiovascular disease
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After participating in this activity, clinicians should be able to:
- Describe and communicate novel medical and device therapies to their patients as well as activate resources to deploy these therapies in a timely manner
- Identify patients with advanced heart failure and refer patients for specialized assessment and treatment
- Discuss end-of-life and palliative care planning for the advanced heart failure patient and recognize those patient who may be candidates for advanced options
