Overview

This educational activity is designed to address the underlying needs of multiple disciplines that are working with athletes and ways to prevent, acknowledge and treat catastrophic injuries.  By discussing persistent topics about these catastrophic injuries with athletes and patients, the attendee will further learn how to serve patients in need.

This is a live and virtual activity. The Zoom link will be sent shortly before the event date, to the email used to register. Please be sure to indicate if you will attend live or watch virtually when you register.
The event will be held live at the MART Auditorium.

Learning Objectives

  • Outline past occurrences at the collegiate level during athletic events and analyze how the injuries were managed.
  • Integrate the current and emerging trends in concussion preventions and treatment into practice to structure future treatments.
  • Describe the current trend in treating severe orthopedic injuries as it relates to the athlete.
  • Evaluate ways to manage off site catastrophic injuries and how to diagnose various equestrian athlete injuries.
  • Analyze the current state of catastrophic youth injuries/illnesses in relation to athletics and coordinate ways to diagnose and treat these injuries/illnesses.
  • Monitor the current state of emergency action plans across various divisions of athletics and integrate the current standards into the attendees emergency action plans as they stand today.
  • Review the current status of NCAA catastrophic management protocols and implement them during athletic competitions. 
  • Identify the treatment and current modes of diagnosis of acute compartment syndrome with regards to the athlete.
  • Discuss the current treatments for chest and abdominal injuries during athletic events and coordinate ways to diagnose these injuries.
  • Outline the role of emergency medical services with regards to sideline communication and management of catastrophic injuries.
  • Evaluate the modes of diagnosing catastrophic spinal injuries during athletic events and analyze the current methods of diagnosis.
  • Analyze cardiology related catastrophic events during competitive sports and evaluate effective ways to diagnose and treat these incidences. 

Accreditation

The School of Medicine, State University of New York at Stony Brook designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.00 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits . Physicians should only claim the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
