read more ↘ modality for evaluating abnormalities of the joints in the upper and lower extremities in patients suffering from conditions like osteoarthritis.
This bedside screening tool can identify which joints are involved and determine the extent of damage to the affected joints. Having the ability to assess multiple joints from various surfaces at the same time is useful for the clinician so that they have the whole story at the time of the exam. Ultrasound can also provide valuable information about the structures around the joints, such as any tendons and ligaments that may be impacted by the bony overgrowths caused by OA.
Here are 6 ultrasound findings associated with osteroarthritis:
1️⃣ Osteophytes
2️⃣ Cartilage loss that may result in loose bodies
3️⃣ Joint space narrowing
4️⃣ Extrusion of the meniscus or labrum
5️⃣ Effusion and/or synovial proliferation
6️⃣ Joint instability
Ultrasound-guided steroid injections into the arthritic joint are used to help with the symptoms the patient is experiencing.
Some of the joints most commonly affected by OA that are visualized on ultrasound are the Hip, Knee, DIP, Basilar, and First MTP joints.
