read more ↘ NYP, his hospital expanded ICU capacity and they converted the cardiothoracic and vascular departments to rooms to negative pressure. They also created dedicated COVID zones and bubble zones to keep the COVID area isolated. They wear waterproof suits for procedures involving patient airways. There treatment protocol is no antiviral therapy in ICU patients, use of several immunomodulatory drugs. The mechanical ventilation strategies were tailored for each patient: non-invasive ventilation, intubation if necessary, protective mechanical ventilation. CT scans played a big diagnostic role since it may identify false negatives obtained from RT-PCR during early stages of the disease. They were concerned with keeping patients from a more mild form of COVID-19 associated pneumonia to one that was normal ARDS. They found that inhaled nitric oxide can improve lung gas and blood flow distribution. It is important that patients receive earlier treatment since when they get to the ICU, they are already severe.
