It is my great pleasure to introduce my invited Presidential Speaker ...
read more ↘ for this year’s Closed Meeting. I have known Dr. James H. Herndon for 24 years, having worked for him at two different Universities in two different cities.

His career is truly remarkable and he is eminently qualified to speak to us today on a topic about which he is very passionate, patient safety.

First of all, he was appointed Chairman of Orthopaedics at Brown University at the age of 39 and after transforming that program to a nationally prominent orthopaedic residency he moved to the University of Pittsburgh were as The David Silver Professor and Chairman of Orthopaedics he initiated a period of renaissance for that Orthopaedics at UPMC. He was subsequently selected to be the First William H. and Joanna A. Harris Professor and Chair of Orthopaedics at Harvard. Under his leadership at Partners Healthcare the Harvard Combined Orthopaedic Program experienced exponential growth in both quality and quantity.

His leadership roles and accomplishments are too many to lists but I should mention several highlights. During the course of his career he was the only orthopaedic surgeon (to my knowledge) to have served as President of AAOS, AOA, and ABOS.

In mid-career he earned his degree in Business and used his business skills to wed a passion for quality care and patient safety to a sound business approach at each institution where he was chair. At UPMC his leadership skills were further utilized as he was appointed to the post of Vice President of Medical Services as well as the Associate Senior Chancellor for Health Sciences. I could go on and on, as he has been a member or chair of over 200 committees at each of his prior institutions and more than this in all of the organizations, which have been fortunate to have had him as a member.

In Good to Great by Jim Collins 5 levels of leadership are described in order to understand how the greatest leaders help their companies excel over their competitors. A level 5 leader is described as an individual who “builds enduring greatness through a paradoxical blend of personal humility and professional will.”

Harry S. Truman said, “You can accomplish anything in life, provided you do not mind who gets the credit.”

Both statements characterize Jim Herndon. Please join me and welcome him as our Invited Presidential Speaker at our Annual Closed Meeting
